What is happening to Xtra?

On March 1 xtraMSN split to form Yahoo!xtra and msn.co.nz. Let’s track the results using Netratings data. (Alexa does not have anything interesting, and I do not have Hitwise data) The old Xtramsn site is now 1 page, which lets you choose between yahoo!xtra and msn. Neither of those new sites are yet tracked by …

When will the penny drop? US Online Advertising 3-5 times here..

Just announced: 2006 US online advertising hit $16.8bn, showing a 34% growth rate over 2005. That compares to NZ’s $65m and 48% growth. One way to compare is by population – USA online ad spend was US$56 per person, and NZ online ad spend was $NZ$15.80 or US$10.80 per person. That US number equates NZ$81.60 …

eBay Homepage Design

eBay Homepages vary by geography – as Auctions is a fairly geographically and culturally constrained business. Still, it is interesting to see just how dramatic the differences are: Best homepage – the simplest by far, is Canada. The page is approaching Google simplicity, and it is abundantly clear what you have to do – enter …

Kiva and Steers in Kenya

Disintermediate a Nobel Prize winning business and lend money to villagers around the world directly. There does not seem to be a revenue model for investors (i.e. the loans do not pay interest), and obviously there are verification costs, but it’s an interesting start – Kiva.org Even without a revenue model for investors there has …

The money quote “Eventually, though, eroding fundamentals will overwhelm managerial brilliance“ The History “..when two or more papers existed in a major city (which was almost universally the case a century ago), the one that pulled …

How we surf in NZ: Time online

The local industry moved to ‘Unique Visitors’ and, once the number of Unique Visitors exceeded the population of New Zealand, to ‘Unique Browsers’. Many sites and advertisers like using …

Who on earth is designerexposure?

Whoever they are they managed to beat heavily advertised Ferrit into ‘2nd biggest retailer‘ spot. It’s not much of a spot – after all Trade Me has about 100% of the retail pageviews. (or 197.1m out of 198.5m total retail for ‘total traffic’ week ending 25 Feb, 2007) From the article ” Trade Me has …

Measuring Yahoo!Xtra and msn.co.nz

From what I see (from the page sources) it appears that msn.co.nz is measuring traffic using Nielsen NetRatings, but that Yahoo!xtra is not. (I may be wrong). This will make things very “interesting” for Yahoo!xtra advertising sales teams. Corporate Yahoo! may not realize that the advertisers in NZ demand tracking from NetRatings, and the locals …

yahoo!xtra versus msn. Overall impact

MSN’s offering is woeful. The search is embarrassingly unusable and takes you off-site, the site itself looks like it was slapped together at midnight last night and the lack of advertising makes you feel like there is no local team nor reason for existence. About the only thing that MSN did well was getting their …
