Stuff and NZHerald upgraded late last week. I should really, and much before now, have commented on the new design of both. Frankly neither of them really do it for me and I have simply stopped looking at them. The sunny days probably have something to do with it… Friday page impressions were up against …

Rod Drury sees the Yahoo!Xtra (what an unwieldy name) tie-up as creating opportunities for other players. He asks: What does Microsoft do? The choices are go it alone or tie up with a media company – pick one from TVNZ, TV3, APN or Fairfax. My pick is TVNZ, followed by APN. What is the homepage …
Reselling tickets takes a step backwards
Two disturbing articles today – one that eBay UK will not allow reselling of tickets to the giant Concert for Diana, and the second that New Zealand is introducing laws restricting re-sales of tickets to “big events” to a maximum of face value. People – you cannot fight economics, and you will lose in the …
46% of Asian internet users have a blog…
The blogging stats get bigger and bigger it seems, but this one comes via an online survey from Microsoft MSN & Windows Live in seven markets in Asia – notably excluding China. With a self selected respondant set – it isn’t surprising to see bloggers over-respond to a survey on blogging – these numbers have …
The online dating timeline…
A great dating site thought starter from Fred Stutzman via David Evans at onlinedatingpost.. “Situational relevance and the patterns of decay based on the lifecycle of users.” Dating sites should take notice of this. A member during the first week or two does not have the same needs as a one year member. Most sites …
Yahoo!Xtra
Yahoo!7 has officially tied up with Xtra- to create Yahoo!Xtra for New Zealand, launching March 1, 2007. With Yaho0!7 owning 51% of the JV there is hope for a great site. But early signs of the continued amateur hour are a non-existent yahooxtra.co.nz site, although at least AJ PArk has registered yahooxtra.co.nz and yahooxtra.com (and …
NZHerald follows suit…
NZHerald announced their redesign today – it’s looking good, and they left the logo alone… It’s been a transition year for Stuff and the NZHerald, as they have shufled staff and changed systems. Next year should see them both move into a welcome cycle of continuous improvement.
French bloggers
apparently one out of three people in France blogs. incroyable! I wonder how the Google staffer backed this assertion up.. IHT (clipped from NYTimes) has a bit more, saying 60% of French internet users visited a blog in May 2006, and 12% of those online in France had then created a blog. That’s a sea …
Stuffing it up?
Preview of the new Stuff. Not bad and a welcome improvement based on smh, but fix the logo. Please. old logo (kids, crayons, fun and simple) new logo (MBA, excel, corporate and serious) smh logo (serious. corporate) The Sydney Morning Herald has a serious name and requires a serious logo. However when you call something …
Adwords and the long tail
It seems, and I’ve been hearing this from Google themselves as well as from blogs and other companies, that buying up the long tail of google search terms is an efficient way to get customers. This means mining your site for the search terms people use to get there, and even using a tool to do …
Apple pre-paid revenue
Rod Drury asks what if Apple had major pre-paid revenue. They do have some – from the iTunes music cards. The cards are great for gifts, and also if you want to get content not available here – such as TV shows and movies. Whenever I’m in the US I pick up a card and …
shoe sizer
so simple. A wonderful use of technology – 6 cameras and some smarts combine to give an accurate 3d map of feet – which lets shoe stores sell more…
Apple NZ Store open, Renaissance still doesn’t get it
What staggers me about the Renaissance email I referred to earlier, is that nowhere in the email do they refer to the iTunes & Apple.co.nz store opening. Even worse, I can’t see any reference to Apple.co.nz or iTunes on the Renaissance website. I understand that Renaissance probably don’t clip the ticket on Apple sales through …

NZ Renassance Apple Store closed
Just got an email from Renassance – Apple’s local distributor. I really really hope this means Apple will enter the market with their own store, but I am afraid not. Renassance’s store did have pretty lousy service so it’s not such a bad thing, but they did have the apple.co.nz/store site. turns out iTunes has …
Wasted online advertising spend
Here’s a classic example of what not to do. Repco, a parts supplier, has started advertising online. Good. They purchased this (flash) banner. OK I supose. But the banner links to an ugly catalogue designed for print – the same catalogue no doubt that is in everybody’s mailbox. And yes – there is no way …
